If I remember right it was due to lightsabers originally being kinetic based damage which later got changed to its own 'lightsaber' damage type but the melee defences normal professions had were still working against the converted lightsaber damage type. Not to mention fencers dodge probably half the attacks thrown at them definatly means trouble for Jedi.
