Apr 12, 2008 - Well dubbed. "white nigger" does refer to Irish, it is normative for an army to dehumanise enemy, the British soldiers invented the term bogwog. However this is not just about NI, it is about the UK military - Cromwell's 'new model army' and references different exotic postings for applicants, it's against UK militarism full stop.

Jigaboo123456 Says:

Apr 25, 2008 - Some people see the army as a way of using the lower strata of society to defend the interests of the better off, hence "white nigger". It is not a racist term, it is an awareness of society's disregard for the soldier.this was recorded at a time of high civilian unemployment. I was proud to be a White Nigger for 11 years

Jigaboo123456 Says:

Apr 25, 2008 - To all the sanctimonious white liberals and blacks with a chip on their shoulder. The "White niggers" are British soldiers. The British Army is still formed on Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army which set up proper wages and careers for soldiers(and hence won the English Civil War.

Apr 27, 2008 - I love this song I used to listen to it as a child so i had know idea what it was about but my name is oliver so i guess i related to that.hehe

May 3, 2008 - Some of you are close, but no cigar. The important part of this song is being missed. It's about class. The working classes make up the bulk of the British army. They were trained to fight to keep the rich rich and the powerful powerful (nothing too be fucking proud of, jigaboo). The elite scum who benefit from war consider every white that doesn't move in their circle to be expendable "white niggers", be they Irish or working class grunts in the Army.

neocantmj Says:

May 5, 2008 - Correct fine sir, The predominant theme of this song was in this instance the subjugation of the working class. But b/l/m/u,..this is not isolated on the British isle, rather a theme coexisting in all continents and counties of the world. Have no fear, the American version of Oliver's army is fighing this Gd war in Iraq. I pray the rest of Europe and most importantly the Brits like yourself realize most Amercns do not support this nonsense and wish 9/11 never allowed the excuse for it to happen.

cungar Says:

May 13, 2008 - FYI Elvis Costello is a white liberal.

Jun 22, 2008 - Love the intellectual deconstruction. Refreshing to find brains on YT.I met Elvis in '84 @ TOTPs. He was lovely. I was dating someone (also a successful musician) who begged me to get Elvis's autograph!I never asked anyone for autographs myself, very un-cool.The thing (haunts me to this day) is that apart from my boyfriend, my best friend had asked me for Holly Johnsons autograph.I cut Elvis off in mid sentance to saunter over to HJ for an autograph. I must've looked so flakey! *cringe*

Nov 14, 2008 - Great song!!

skrason Says:

Nov 28, 2008 - I can't think of any shows from the late '70s or early '80s that allowed bands to play live. Top of the Pops was all lip synced. Other than Grey Whistle Test and SNL (from which Elvis Costello was banned for something like 20 years for playing Radio Radio), everyone else mimed to a prerecorded track.

Marhleet Says:

Dec 10, 2008 - probably because Ashlee said she never lipsynchsor somethingand was caught outwhereas TV is usually lipsynched, it's a known given.Countdown in Oz did some live stuff (thinks)

znotty Says:

Jan 5, 2009 - the first time i saw Thin Lizzy was on Kenny Everatt with Gary Moore with them ,waiting for an alibi as i remember.
