The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was a historic event held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre (2.4 km²; 240 ha) dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel (Sullivan County) is 43 miles (69 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, which is in adjoining Ulster County.To many, the festival exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the "hippie era." Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend. Although attempts have been made over the years to recreate the festival, the original event has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.The event was captured in a successful 1970 movie, Woodstock, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", which memorialized the event and became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

The difference is that it's harder to weed out the musicians with real soul these days... although you have to admit the sixties had it's fair share of soulless acts concocted by record executives, it's just that they haven't survived 40 years like the artists with real musical vision.

Dec 6, 2008 - this one was held in new york state, near Woodstock, a small town.woodstock 94-99 was held not far from the original woodstock location.( just a big field )

But with commercial interests everywhere compartmentalizing people, even many 'artists' today just perform to their select groups (an audience wearing the same ironic clothes from the same store in the mall). Get rid of apathy and cynicism, replace it with passion for life and spontaneity, and perhaps shutter a few needless companies, then maybe we'll have something decent.
