Ira Glass is an excellent story teller, I don't dispute that, and his procress is an artistic one, a commercial artist one but that is another can of worms. His subject matter though is real people being editing to specefic ends and inforced by ready made interpretation for the audience.

Aug 28, 2008 - I don't think you understand what's going on here. Take any random nonfiction story. There is a way you could tell this story that would make it sound more uninteresting than it is. Or, you could tell the same story with all the same true facts in a way that would keep a reader's attention. Form doesn't trump content; it's more like putting a nice frame on a painting with rough edges. Much nicer to look at. This is the art here. Nothing changes about the information presented.

A novelist for instance, doesn't stop in mid story to comment on the development of the story. That is the task of the reader. Art is always a relationship between the artist and the interpreter. It is the task of the interpreter to make sense of the content themselves.
