The viruses as they can be

All PC viruses can be separated into several groups by actions they perform.

There are some harmless viruses that multiply and do whatever never revealing themselves. The only secondary effect of them is a decrease of free space on hard drive but usually they don’t take lots of it.

The next stage is not dangerous viruses that reveal themselves by various sound, graphics or text effects. They might start playing some song or turn the screen upside down but all data on your PC would remain untouched and all your software would work correctly.

Unfortunately, the viruses’ developers do not limit themselves by above jokes as most of the viruses cause malfunctions in your PC and buzzing of your software. In worst cases the viruses have integrated algorithms that delete or distort your hard drive data. One of them is the “OneHalf” virus that caused pandemic 2-3 years ago as it encoded the hard drive data at the same time causes constant Windows buzzing and in certain conditions it “was forgetting” the key to the code. More primitive viruses may just erase the disliked files or stuff them with some crap instead of data. Not dangerous viruses may also harm the computers as their developers’ mistakes may lead to fatal results.

Periodically the mass media brings up news about the viruses able to spoil monitors, break hard drives and cause other “physical” damages. As no one has seen them it still can be considered a myth. If not one case… In summer of 1998 Europeans suffered the pandemic of Win95.CIH that came from South-East Asia. The virus destroyed PC BIOS causing damages to the system card. It’s developers used a fact that most computers flash-BIOS is rewritable so the virus was rewriting it with random trash and the system cards then had no chances to be restored. Though, the Russian virusologists of “Kasperskyy Lab” found a cure from that virus just after its appearance.

Now, let’s look at the “way of life” of different viruses. The firs category of them would be the “boot-sector” viruses. They get activated in time of PC startup and live in drives’ system areas that PC refers to when getting started. They may be transmitted as via disks as via files (file-boot viruses).

The second category is the file viruses that live in executable files and infect them. The virus gets activated with file activation and starts it destructive actions then. They are easily transmitted and widely used. Also, this category has viruses that live in PC networks, network protocols and OS. Taking into account the Internet popularity the development of such viruses is the most perspective now.

Finally, the youngest and the most common category now are the “macro viruses”. They are the products of MS Office development as now MS Word and Excel are able not only deal with texts and tables but also thanks to integrated tools develop complicated programs including viruses. The prompt macro viruses transmitting is caused by big documents exchange in formats that are considered the standard now. And as users got used to viruses living only in executable files they treat the documents files without any caution.

The bad programs

Not only the viruses mess with your PC and software as at least 3 more types of harmful programs are detected: worms, Trojans and logical bombs. Though, there’s no precise designation as Trojans may contain viruses and viruses – logical bombs.

The Trojan programs
The Greeks have a myth of the city of Troy conquest: they left a huge horse near the city gates and when the curious citizens pulled this horse in the soldiers broke out of the horse and conquered the city.
The Trojan programs work the same as its designation seems to be harmless until the user loads it to his PC when the program starts performing some undocumented functions. Often, The Trojans are used for viruses’ distribution by their original writing to BBS station and when downloaded by users they start infecting their PCs. After The Trojans complete their missions they may deactivate themselves to harden the detection of causes to system malfunctions.

The logical bombs
These are the programs or their modules that in certain conditions perform unauthorized actions. The logical bomb may “explode” at the certain date or when something is added to your database and only its developer may specify such conditions. These bombs may be integrated in viruses, Trojans and regular software.
There’s a famous case when a programmer developing the accounting system integrated some logical bomb in it. It periodically checked the lists for receiving salary and when its developer’s last name disappeared the bomb destroyed the system.
The logical bombs are widely used by black-mailers as let’s say a fired programmer may notify the management of logical bomb in a system and his ability to disable it (surely, for the good compensation).

The worms
The worms are designed for specific actions and are system integration oriented. They may detect the password for bank system entrance and transfer some amounts to accounts of their developers.
The most well known worm was developed by Cornell University student Robert Morris and getting into Internet on November of 1988 in 5 hours it was able to get into over 6000 wired PCs.
It’s hard to designate whether the program is a Trojan one and if it has a logical bomb. So, we advise you not to copy files from BBS, to never exchange the software with your pals and to never by a pirate copies of licensed software as any of these programs may have some harmful modules integrated.

How the infection goes?

The virus may never appear in your PC just by itself. If your PC is not wired to Internet and has no modem and got all disk-drives disabled the virus would have no chances to get there.

The virus may get to your computer only if it executes the infected program or loads some data from infected disk. Most of times the viruses get to computers with pirate software and Freeware and Shareware.

The basic ways for viruses’ penetration:
- Downloading programs from electronic billboards and global networks
- Disks and software exchange
- Penetration through the local network.

He was a cowboy, mister, and he loved the land. He loved it so much he made a woman out of dirt and married her. But when he kissed her, she disintegrated. Later, at the funeral, when the preacher said, "Dust to dust," some people laughed, and the cowboy shot them. At his hanging, he told the others, "I'll be waiting for you in heaven--with a gun."
